Construction Painter

Main duties & responsibilities

• Read work orders, project specifications, blueprints, and client instructions to determine painting requirements, surface preparation needs, and materials required for each job.
• Prepare, clean, sand, scrape, wash, power-wash, mask, and strip interior and exterior surfaces before painting.
• Repair cracks, holes, and surface imperfections using patching compounds, drywall mud, caulking, taping, sanding, and sealers to ensure smooth surfaces before painting.
• Mix, thin, tint, and blend paints, primers, stains, varnishes, sealers, and other coatings according to project requirements and manufacturer specifications.
• Apply paint, primer, stain, varnish, sealers, wallpaper, and other finishes to walls, ceilings, doors, trim, decks, and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
• Operate and maintain airless and conventional spray equipment, rollers, brushes, and other tools to apply uniform coats on residential and commercial surfaces.
• Stain, seal, varnish, and protect wood surfaces, decks, and exterior structures to improve durability and appearance.
• Safely use ladders, scaffolding, swing stages, and related access equipment to reach high ceilings, exterior walls, and multi-level work areas while following workplace safety requirements.
• Protect client property by setting up drop cloths, masking trim, covering furniture or flooring, and securing work areas before painting.
• Clean and maintain painting tools, spray equipment, work areas, and job sites daily.
• Estimate materials and costs when required, and advise clients or supervisors on paint colours, finishes, and wall-covering choices.

Requirements

• Language: English.
• Education: Secondary (high) school graduation certificate, or equivalent experience.
• Experience: 1 to less than 2 years of related painting / construction-painting experience. Candidates with 2+ years are preferred.
• Work location: On site, work is completed at the physical job location; there is no remote option.
• Transportation: Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to various job sites. Own transportation may be required depending on the job-site location.
• Weight handling: Up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
• Own equipment: Steel-toed safety boots required. The employer provides main tools, materials, and job equipment unless otherwise discussed.

Experience & specialization

• Equipment & machinery: airless spray equipment, conventional spray painting, brush painting, roller painting, patterned rollers.
• Surface preparation: drywall taping / patching, surface cleaning and preparation.
• Coating & application: paint spraying, multi-colour finishes.
• Wall covering: wallpaper, where required.

Work conditions & physical capabilities

• Attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to distinguish between colours.
• Bending, crouching, and kneeling; standing for extended periods.
• Physically demanding work, including working at heights.
